For those of you that are looking to experience more of Denver and Colorado than just the Convention, you will have endless opportunities available. The Metro area has a large variety of places to see and things to do. The State of Colorado offers unlimited places to visit and magnificent sites to see. We hope that you will take advantage of the time you have here to partake in the beauty of the area.
Colorado contains many National Parks, Monuments, and Forests. You will find one beautiful site after another just about anywhere in the State. People here are very active in all sorts of outdoor activities. Hiking, biking, running, rafting, skiing, climbing are just a few of the benefits that can be experienced while here. The list is endless.

The Metro area has so many attractions that you are bound to find something of interest to you. Among these are cultural attractions such as the Denver Performing Arts Complex, with many theaters for drama, dance, and music presentations. The Denver Art Museum has just finished an addition designed by Daniel Liebiskind and offers any number of interesting exhibits. It certainly is a “must see” activity. There are numerous museums in the city, many within walking distance from the hotel, that feature various collections of information. The Colorado History Museum, The Museum of Nature and Science, The Black History Museum, and a Railroad Museum are but a few of the possibilities. There are many art galleries around the city, as well. Architectural sites are to be found all around the city, and there are tours available. If you are interested in antiques, there are some neighborhoods that house several antique shops. Of course, Denver is the capitol of Colorado, so you can visit the Capitol Building. This is the home of the Denver Mint, so you might want to visit that building, too. The Denver Zoo and the Denver Botanic Gardens are relatively close to downtown and can be accessed easily via public transportation. For those interested in shopping, there are several malls and shopping districts accessible by public transportation (Cherry Creek Shopping Center, Park Meadows Mall, the 16th Street Mall). If amusement parks are your thing, Six Flags over Elitch’s is just a few blocks from the hotel, and there is a smaller park a few miles away (Lakeside).
Denver has one of the largest public parks systems in the country and has lots of green space throughout the city. If you are a walker or runner or bicyclist, you can find space in which to exercise close to the hotel. Cherry Creek runs through part of the city and there are paths beside the Creek available for your use. Speaking of running, there will be two marathons in the area, one, the Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon, ½ Marathon, and Relay, the weekend before the Convention (Sunday, May 20), and another, The Boulder Bolder on Memorial Day (Monday, May 28). If golfing is your passion, there are a number of public courses in the city, some quite close to downtown. The Colorado Rockies Baseball team starts a home stand on Memorial Day. You can get to Coors Field easily via the 16th Street Mall bus. Tennis courts should be easy to find, as well. You might even get to try kayaking in Confluence Park, near the REI store, not far from downtown.
This is only a small sampling of the possibilities available. If you have questions or would like suggestions for some activity, please feel free to contact us via our Web site. We have many resources among our Club members and can put you in touch with those that can offer suggestions to help make your trip here more enjoyable and memorable. If you need help with planning some tour other than our Pre and Post-Convention tours, please feel free to contact Mile Hi Travel. There is a link on our Web site. However you arrive, by train, plane, car, or RV, we can offer you suggestions for getting into the city and to the hotel. If you arrive via plane, take advantage of the coupon on Mile Hi Travel’s Web site for the Super Shuttle. If you want to rent a car when you arrive, there is a discount for Enterprise Rental on the same Web site. They will bring a car to the hotel for you or you can rent one at the airport. If you arrive via the train (Amtrak), you can jump on a free Mall bus at Union Station and travel to California St., then walk a short block to the hotel. Whatever your needs are concerning travel and sightseeing, we want to help in any way we can. We are excited about your arrival and hope that your time with us is enjoyable.

We thought you might want to have a little information about the climate here in Denver in May. The average temperatures for May are 71 (high) and 44 (low). For June, the averages are 81 (high) and 52 (low). The average precipitation for May is 11 inches and for June, 9 inches. This could be in the form of snow or rain. Of course, we are planning on having the best of all worlds for our Convention dates, but, as they say here a lot, just wait 5 minutes and the weather will change. Because of the many possibilities, we would suggest that you pack a variety of clothing to meet the challenges you may experience. Consider layering your clothes and that way, you can address any changes along the way. A warm jacket is highly recommended if you are going to spend any time in the mountains. This would include your travels with the sightseeing tours we have planned. You may be as high as 14,000 ft and it will definitely be colder up there. You might also want to include a warm hat and gloves or mittens. Better to be safe than sorry. A spring or fall jacket will be in order for those of you staying down in Denver, as the nights cool down considerably after the sun goes down. For dancing hours, shorts should work nicely. If the weather cooperates, then shorts will be a mainstay of your wardrobe. The other important item to include is sunscreen with a high sun-block rating. You are much closer to the sun here, and the air is thinner, so the effects of the sun are much greater, even if the temperatures are lower or it is partly cloudy. Bring a pair of sunglasses to wear when out of doors. In addition, you will want to bring moisturizing creams with you, as it is very dry here. You will use quite a lot of it during your stay.
Because of the altitude, there are some other things you want to consider while you are here in Denver, the Mile High City. The air is thin and, consequently, there is less oxygen available. Most people will not have a big problem, but some will experience symptoms due to the altitude. You might find yourself breathing deeper and/or faster and feel a bit short of breath at times. That is one of the first reactions and it is normal. You may develop a headache, a touch of nausea, or feel tired. These symptoms usually disappear within 24-36 hours. If you do experience any of these symptoms, stop what you are doing for a while. Sometimes aspirin or ibuprofen can help with these symptoms. The number one suggestion is to drink lots of fluids, preferably water; avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol has extra impact at altitude, so monitor your alcohol intake. We would suggest that you try to drink as much water as possible for 2 or 3 days before arriving to be sure you are well hydrated. Then be sure to drink water or other fluids often throughout your stay. It would be a good idea to carry a water bottle with you all of the time. You will lose more body moisture from deeper breathing and perspiration (you might not even notice that you are perspiring), so it is important that you maintain your body’s water store. Contact lens wearers may need to moisturize their eyes more frequently and may need to remove the lenses on a daily basis to let the eyes take in more oxygen. Listen to what your body is telling you, and respond accordingly. Your time in Denver will be most enjoyable if you heed this advice. We look forward to seeing you in May.
